While popular narratives sometimes link the Lumbee to the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke – a theory that suggests descendants of the English colonists intermarried with local Native Americans – a more nuanced understanding points to a rich heritage stemming primarily from various Siouan-speaking peoples, such as the Cheraw, Saponi, Waccamaw, and Pee Dee, who inhabited the region long before European arrival. These groups, alongside Tuscarora and other displaced Indigenous peoples, sought refuge and eventually coalesced in the protective isolation of the swamplands and river basins of what is now Robeson County. This geographic sanctuary allowed them to maintain a distinct cultural identity and community structure, even as colonial expansion encroached.

By the 18th century, a well-established, self-sufficient Native American community had taken root in Robeson County. The search for an encompassing and universally accepted name led them back to the heart of their homeland. In 1953, the community officially adopted the name "Lumbee," a powerful choice that anchored their identity to the lifeblood of their territory – the Lumber River, known locally as the Lumbee River – which had sustained their ancestors for generations. This name was formally recognized by the state of North Carolina in 1953, a significant step in their journey of self-definition.

Perhaps the most iconic moment of Lumbee self-determination arrived on January 18, 1958, at Hayes Pond. In a blatant act of racial intimidation, the Ku Klux Klan, led by Grand Dragon James W. "Catfish" Cole, attempted to hold a rally in Maxton, North Carolina, aiming to assert white supremacy and terrorize the Lumbee people. They underestimated the Lumbee’s resolve. Instead of finding a fearful populace, Cole and his Klansmen were met by an organized, armed, and determined community of Lumbee men, women, and children.

As the Klansmen began their rally, holding burning crosses and spewing hate, the Lumbee, outnumbering them by a significant margin, emerged from the surrounding woods. Armed with shotguns, rifles, and sticks, they fired into the air, effectively dispersing the white supremacists in a dramatic confrontation that made national headlines. Klan robes were torn, their car was overturned, and Cole himself fled, leaving behind his microphone and an undelivered speech. "We knew they were coming, and we were ready," recalled Reverend D.F. Lowry, a prominent Lumbee leader at the time, whose words echo the collective resolve. "This was our home, and we would defend it." The "Battle of Hayes Pond" was a watershed moment, a powerful declaration that the Lumbee would not be intimidated and would actively defend their community and their dignity.
